Beginners Course

With live music from Lily Sheehan and Zoé Basha 🎵🎸

This is a four-week beginners course for learning Balboa from the start. We will build the basic rhythm, partner connection, footwork and social-dance habits over four Wednesday evenings, with enough repetition each week for the material to settle.

Balboa is a close-embrace swing dance that grew out of crowded Southern California ballrooms in the 1930s. It is compact, rhythmic and very social: most of the dance happens through small weight changes, pulse and connection rather than big shapes. The videos below show what Balboa can look like at higher levels, so you can get a feel for the music and movement before class.

Level/Experience

This course is for complete beginners. You do not need any dance experience, and this can be your first dance lesson.

You do not need to bring a partner. We rotate partners every few minutes so everyone gets to practise with different people. If you come with someone and only want to dance with them, that is also completely fine.
